Standing desks have seen considerable enthusiasm in recent years. Presented as the antidote to sedentary lifestyle, they invaded open spaces and home offices. But scientific data tells a more nuanced story.
Standing still for hours is hardly better than sitting. Prolonged standing increases leg vein pressure, fatigues lower back muscles and can worsen some lumbar pain. Swapping one static position for another does not solve the fundamental problem: lack of variation.
What works is alternation. Height-adjustable desks show the best results. Ideally alternate every 30-45 minutes. No rigid protocol needed, listen to your body.
